This listing is exclusively for 4-packs of jujube starter plants; they are young and fragile and will need to be raised with care before they are ready to go in the ground. For a single starter tree or a more mature tree check out our other Jujube GA866 listing: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1765333284/jujube-ga-866-tree-ziziphus-jujuba
The GA-866 is a fairly new variety of outstanding quality. This variety is highly sought after for its particularly high sugar content, and reliable production of large, elongated fruit measuring about 1.5 inches long. The fruit ripens in the fall and can be harvested when ripe or dried on the tree. For more information about jujube trees, please refer to the later sections of this listing.
***This plant was propagated in a tissue culture lab, ensuring it‘s disease and pest free. These trees are grown in ellepot plugs to promote healthy root development. Tissue culture produces a clone of the GA-866 mother plant while retaining the growth habits of a seedling. Because these trees are not grafted, suckers are less common, and any that do emerge from the base will match the main trunk variety. ***
Additional growing information:
-USDA Zones: 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11
-Will produce fruit with low chill hours.
-Excellent Disease Resistance
-Jujubes will start producing in 3 or 4 years.
-Mature Size: 12-16 ft.
-Recommended Spacing: 12-16 ft.
-Water Needs: 4-8 gallons per week May through Sept.
-Pollination Requirement: The GA 866 Jujube is partially self-fruitful and can produce a good amount of fruit on its own. However, planting a compatible variety nearby can enhance your yield. With jujube‘s heavy production, you likely won’t need a pollinator tree unless you’re aiming for agricultural-scale production.
More information about Jujube trees & fruit:
Jujube fruit is often referred to as Chinese date or red date, but despite these common names, it is not a true date. It belongs to the buckthorn family and is classified as a species of Ziziphus. This plant grows as a small deciduous tree or shrub, reaching heights of 12 to 16 feet. Jujube trees thrive in hot, arid regions and are highly drought tolerant. They feature shiny green leaves and small, inconspicuous flowers. The fruit ripens in the fall and can either be dried on the tree or harvested when fully ripe.
Jujube can be eaten fresh or dried. Fresh jujubes have a sweet, apple-like flavor and a crunchy texture. While fresh jujubes are delicious, they become even sweeter as they dry, developing a unique, marshmallow-like texture. When candied and dried, the fruit resembles dates, hence the common name.
